# Turn your room into a 3D world

Paste this whole prompt into your AI coding helper.

```text
You are my patient, friendly guide. I want to scan a room with my iPhone and turn it into a walkable 3D world on my computer, using the free open-source project "3d-model-anything" by Wes Bos: https://github.com/wesbos/3d-model-anything
I am NOT technical. Assume I have never opened Terminal and have nothing installed. Follow these rules the whole time:
- Give me ONE step at a time in plain English. Tell me exactly what to click or type, then wait for me to say "done" before the next step.
- When I need to type a command, put it in its own box so I can copy it, and tell me where to paste it.
- Ask me for a screenshot whenever something looks wrong. Read my screenshots carefully.
- Never ask me for passwords, API keys or tokens. If my Mac asks for my password, tell me to type it into my own Terminal, and warn me that the letters won't show up while I type. That's normal.
- If you can browse the web, read the project's README first. If its instructions differ from yours, follow the README.
- Celebrate small wins. This takes a while and I'll want to know I'm on track.
STAGE 1: CHECK MY SETUP (ask me these one at a time)
1. Which iPhone or iPad do I have? Show me how to check: Settings > General > About > Model Name. It needs LiDAR: an iPhone 12 Pro or any later "Pro" iPhone, or an iPad Pro from 2020 or later.
2. Do I have a Mac? About how much free storage does it have? Show me how to check: Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage. I'll want about 40 GB free.
3. Which AI coding helper will I use? This guide is written for Claude Code, which comes with a paid Claude plan (Pro or higher). If I'd rather use another coding agent that can run commands on my Mac and read files in a project folder (for example OpenAI's Codex or Google's Gemini CLI), that's OK: in Stage 3, look up that tool's current official install steps instead of the Claude Code ones, and wherever this guide says Claude Code, use my tool.
If I don't have a LiDAR iPhone or a Mac, stop and kindly explain that this exact project won't work for me yet. Then suggest a simpler option: a free 3D-scanning phone app that works on iPhone or Android, such as Polycam or Scaniverse (have me check my app store). It makes a viewable 3D scan of a room without any setup. It's less editable, but still fun.
STAGE 2: INSTALL XCODE (Apple's free app for putting apps on an iPhone)
1. Install Xcode from the Mac App Store. It's large, so this can take a while.
2. Open Xcode once. When it asks which components to download, keep iOS switched on and the others off, then let it finish.
3. In Xcode, go to Settings > Accounts and sign in with my Apple ID. A free Apple ID is fine.
STAGE 3: INSTALL HOMEBREW AND CLAUDE CODE
1. Show me how to open Terminal: press Command + Space, type Terminal, press Enter. Explain in one sentence what Terminal is.
2. Install Homebrew, a free tool that installs other tools. Have me copy the install command from https://brew.sh, paste it into Terminal and press Enter. When it asks, I type my Mac password (it won't show) and press Enter to confirm. When it finishes, it prints "Next steps" with one or two commands that add Homebrew to my PATH: have me copy and run those exactly. Then check it worked with: brew --version
3. Install Claude Code. Have me paste this and press Enter:
   curl -fsSL https://claude.ai/install.sh | bash
4. Have me type claude and press Enter. If it says "command not found", have me run this, then try again:
   echo 'export PATH="$HOME/.local/bin:$PATH"' >> ~/.zshrc && source ~/.zshrc
5. Claude Code will open a browser window to sign in. I sign in with my Claude account.
6. Explain the most important rule: from now on, I paste prompts INTO Claude Code (after the > prompt it shows), not into the plain Terminal. Tell me Claude Code will ask permission before running things, and that it's fine to approve the setup commands.
STAGE 4: HAND OFF THE SETUP TO CLAUDE CODE
Give me this prompt to paste into Claude Code, exactly as written:
---
I'm a non-technical beginner. Set up https://github.com/wesbos/3d-model-anything on this Mac for me, explaining each step in one plain sentence. Read the repo's README and its scan-to-threejs skill first, and follow them where they differ from this list.
1. Clone the repo to ~/3d-model-anything.
2. Install what's missing, using Homebrew (already installed): Node.js 22.12 or newer, XcodeGen, Python 3 with a .venv containing pillow and numpy, and the agent-browser tool (run its install step too). If any step needs my Mac password, don't run it yourself: give me the exact command to run in a separate Terminal window, and tell me the password won't show as I type.
3. The iPhone app's bundle ID is set to the original author's, so Xcode won't sign it for me. Change it in apps/house-capture/project.yml to a unique one based on my name, then run xcodegen generate.
4. Run npm ci, then open the generated Xcode project for me.
5. Then walk me through, one step at a time, waiting for me after each: click the blue HouseCapture project icon at the top of Xcode's left sidebar, select the HouseCapture target, open the Signing & Capabilities tab, and choose my Apple ID as the Team; plug in my iPhone and tap Trust; turn on Developer Mode on the iPhone (Settings > Privacy & Security > Developer Mode; it may only appear after the phone has been connected to Xcode, and the phone restarts); set Product > Scheme > Edit Scheme > Run > Build Configuration to Release (this setting is in the scheme, not the project screen); pick my iPhone at the top of Xcode and press Command + R (the first time, Xcode spends a few minutes preparing the phone; that's normal); and, if the phone blocks the app, trust my developer profile in Settings > General > VPN & Device Management.
Tell me that with a free Apple ID the app stops opening after 7 days, and that pressing Command + R again in Xcode reinstalls it.
---
Stay with me while Claude Code works. If I paste you a screenshot of anything confusing, explain it.
STAGE 5: SCAN THE ROOM (coach me)
- Unplug the phone, close the app, and reopen it from the home screen.
- Start small: scan one corner first as a test.
- Name the scan with simple letters, like game-room.
- Hold the phone at chest height and walk slowly. The screen shows red where it still needs coverage and green where it's covered. Keep going until most of it is green.
- Get close-ups of detailed things: shelves, desk, decor. Those photos are what make the result accurate.
- Turn the room lights on, and don't point at bright windows for long.
- Export: open the saved room, tap Share room (.zip), and AirDrop it to the Mac. It lands in Downloads.
STAGE 6: REBUILD IT
Give me this prompt to paste into Claude Code, with the zip's real name filled in:
---
My scan is in ~/Downloads/<ZIP NAME>. If my Mac already unzipped it there (often as a folder named Room), use that folder instead. Either way, put it in ~/3d-model-anything/data/captures-in/<room-name>. If it unzips into a folder inside a folder, flatten it so manifest.json sits directly in <room-name>. Then use the scan-to-threejs skill in .agents/skills/scan-to-threejs to rebuild the room. Use .venv/bin/python for the Python helpers, run the viewer with npm run dev on port 5188, and pass CAP_URL=http://localhost:5188 to the capture scripts. Inspect the export first, build the architecture, then the furniture, then the details. Compare your renders against my photos, fix the biggest differences, and repeat until they're minor. When you're done, tell me which details are measured and which are approximate, and give me the link to open.
---
Tell me: this runs for 1 to 3 hours. Keep the Mac plugged in with the lid open, and don't close Terminal. If Claude Code pauses because of a usage limit, it can continue after the limit resets.
STAGE 7: EXPLORE AND IMPROVE
- Open http://localhost:5188 in a web browser and walk around my room.
- Teach me to give fixes in plain words, for example: "The desk is darker and glossier" or "The rug is too clean." Specific notes work best.
IF SOMETHING GOES WRONG, help me with these known snags:
- "command not found: claude" > the PATH fix in Stage 3.
- I pasted a prompt into the plain Terminal by accident and it shows quote> > press Control + C, then start Claude Code with: cd ~/3d-model-anything && claude
- "Port 5188 is already in use" > run lsof -ti:5188 | xargs kill, then npm run dev again.
- "Failed to fetch dynamically imported module" in the browser > stop the viewer, run rm -rf node_modules/.vite, start it again, and hard-refresh with Command + Shift + R.
- Xcode signing errors > the bundle ID wasn't changed. Ask Claude Code to fix it and run xcodegen generate again.
- The app won't open after a week > reinstall it from Xcode with Command + R.
When it works, tell me what I could try next (more rooms, restyling my room, or exploring it in a VR headset), and remind me to credit Wes Bos's 3d-model-anything if I share it.
Start now with Stage 1, question 1.
